There has been much speculation over when Hulu would adopt a payed subscription model. Frankly, it had to happen sooner or later, and it just happens it is sooner.
Why?
Why would Hulu favor a payed model? Well thats an easy one. Mo Money = Mo Fun for Hulu. I don’t mind that Hulu is trying to milk us for every dime they can, in fact I love the idea of Hulu plus. The user pays an additional fee and receives more/better content.
Pros:
More content. User opting to pay the $9.99 a month fee will receive all the content that non paying users do plus an expanded library of shows and movies available to watch anytime. No more lamenting over having only five episodes of firefly available to watch.
Further, those willing to pay can use the Hulu mobile apps. No more being constrained to the computer screen! Feel free to watch Hulu on your iphone, tv, or game console (sorry not you wii).
Cons:
Ads. Even though the service costs $9.99 you still have to watch all the ads, even on the expanded library of content. Which begs the question…. Netflix anyone? Seriously, Netflix only costs $9.99 and you can watch a huge collection of movies and shows streaming with no ads. Moreover, I cant imagine that Hulu will have access to much more content than Netflix, since Netflix pays for its streaming content through a company (whose name alludes me at the moment) that is partnered with the majority of major studios and networks.
The Possibilities:
Right now I can honestly say; I am not going to pay for Hulu Plus. Why? Because I don’t own an iphone, my tv is hooked up to a computer, and I have netflix. For people like me there is nothing to gain from Hulu Plus. However, this is going to become a must have for those with iphones, hell it makes me want an iphone just to watch hulu.
However, if they decided to remove or heavily reduce ads I might just shell out that $9.99 a month.
