The Facade Printer is frankly nothing more than a glorified paintball gun, a paintball gun that can calculate distances and shoot with 99% accuracy to create magnificent pieces of art. Facade Printer utilizes a paintball tank attached to a computer controlled barrel, which is comparable in design to those used in sniper paintball guns.
Built by three Berlin designers, the rig is meant to create huge images on walls without much effort. There are a number of applications outlined by the designers. The most revolutionary being the humanitarian and disaster relief applications. Imagine a city wreaked by a flood, people milling about searching for food and water. The relief team then makes a huge temporary water symbol on the wall of a building, altering those in need where water can be found.
I could also see this technology being used in viral marketing campaigns. For example, a company could quickly create unique graffiti style ads all over a city (after paying for the ad space of course). I imagine that the paintball gun can handle a number of colors, by creating color layers, which could make some wonderful paintings.
This rig is a truly novel paint ball system, which turns paintballs from little red bullet simulators into little paint pixels.
